Formula & Methodology
Total Cost = (Total Miles ÷ MPG) × Price per Gal | Cost per Person = Total Cost ÷ Passengers

Total travel distance is computed as one-way distance, or doubled for round-trip routes. Fuel required is derived by dividing total miles by your vehicle’s miles per gallon. Multiplying fuel volume by the price per gallon gives total journey fuel cost. Dividing total cost by the number of passengers yields each traveler’s equal share.

Overview

Estimate total fuel expenses for road trips and vacations, and calculate equal splits per passenger. Calculations account for one-way or round-trip distances and vehicle fuel economy. Note that 1 US gallon equals 3.7854 litres, while 1 UK imperial gallon equals 4.5461 litres. Highway conditions, head winds, and luggage weight will influence actual consumption.

Worked Examples

240-Mile One-Way Weekend Trip with 2 Travelers

240 miles one-way, 30.0 MPG (US), $3.50/gal gas price, 2 passengers.

  1. Determine total miles: 240 miles (one-way).
  2. Compute fuel required: 240 miles ÷ 30.0 MPG = 8.0 US gallons.
  3. Calculate total fuel cost: 8.0 gal × $3.50/gal = $28.00.
  4. Calculate share per person: $28.00 ÷ 2 people = $14.00 per person.
Final Answer: Total Cost: $28.00 | Cost per Person: $14.00 (8.0 gallons)

600-Mile Round-Trip Road Trip with 4 Friends

300 miles one-way (600 miles round-trip), 25.0 MPG, $3.75/gal, 4 passengers.

  1. Determine total miles: 300 × 2 = 600 miles.
  2. Compute fuel required: 600 miles ÷ 25.0 MPG = 24.0 US gallons.
  3. Calculate total fuel cost: 24.0 gal × $3.75/gal = $90.00.
  4. Calculate share per person: $90.00 ÷ 4 people = $22.50 per person.
Final Answer: Total Cost: $90.00 | Cost per Person: $22.50 (24.0 gallons)

1,000-Mile Cross-Country Trip (Solo Driver, 32.0 MPG)

1,000 miles one-way, 32.0 MPG, $3.60/gal gas price, 1 passenger.

  1. Calculate fuel required: 1,000 miles ÷ 32.0 MPG = 31.25 gallons.
  2. Calculate total fuel cost: 31.25 gal × $3.60/gal = $112.50.
  3. Cost per mile: $112.50 ÷ 1,000 = $0.1125 / mile.
Final Answer: Total Cost: $112.50 | 31.25 gallons required

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I budget for gas price differences along highway routes?
Gas stations located directly adjacent to major interstate tollways and remote highway exits typically charge $0.20 to $0.50 more per gallon than stations located a mile into nearby towns. Budgeting an extra 10% ensures your fuel fund covers regional variations.
Does running the air conditioner on road trips reduce mileage?
Yes. Air conditioning compressors consume engine power, decreasing fuel economy by 1 to 3 MPG. However, at speeds above 55 mph, driving with windows down creates enough aerodynamic drag to cancel out air conditioning savings.
What is the difference between US and UK gallons in trip planning?
A US gallon equals 3.78541 litres, whereas a UK gallon equals 4.54609 litres. If calculating a trip with UK MPG ratings, remember that imperial gallons yield 20.1% higher numerical ratings than US gallons.
How does vehicle speed affect road trip fuel cost?
Cruising at 75 mph consumes approximately 20% more fuel than cruising at 60 mph due to air resistance. Slowing down from 75 mph to 65 mph on a 500-mile trip can save $10 to $15 in fuel.
How should toll road charges be split alongside gas costs?
Tolls and parking fees are fixed route expenses that should be added to the total journey fuel cost before dividing equally among traveling passengers.
