A grade calculator works out your course grade from your scores and how much each one counts. You enter what you've earned on assignments, quizzes, and exams, and it returns your overall percentage.
Most calculators handle three related questions. Current grade: what you have right now based on completed work. Final grade: what your course grade will be once the final exam is included. Required score: what you must earn on a remaining assessment to reach a target grade.
The maths behind it is a weighted average. Each score is multiplied by its weight, those products are added together, and the total is divided by the weights used. A calculator does this instantly and handles the awkward cases — like categories with different numbers of assignments — that are easy to get wrong by hand.

Before calculating anything, check which system your class uses — the same scores can produce different grades under each. Your syllabus will say.

💡 How to tell which you have: If your syllabus lists percentages that add to 100% (like "Homework 20%, Exams 60%, Participation 20%"), it's weighted. If it lists point values per assignment and a course total, it's points-based. The practical difference matters most for small assignments.
For weighted grading, follow these four steps. The example uses a class weighted Homework 20%, Quizzes 20%, Midterm 25%, Final 35%.
⚠️ The step people miss: Dividing by 65% (not 100%) gives your grade on work completed. If you divide by 100% instead, the ungraded final counts as a zero and your grade looks far worse than it is.
For points-based grading it's simpler: add all points earned, divide by all points possible, multiply by 100. Earning 847 of 1,000 points gives 84.7%.
This is the most common reason students search for a grade calculator, and the formula is straightforward:

Worked example
You currently have 84%, the final is worth 35%, and you want an overall 90%.

When the required score exceeds 100%, you have three realistic options: ask whether extra credit is available, check whether the syllabus replaces a low midterm score with the final, or shift your target to the next grade down and protect it. Knowing this early is far better than discovering it after the exam.
Percentages convert to letter grades, and letter grades convert to GPA points. The scale below is the most widely used in US schools, but institutions vary — always check your syllabus or student handbook.

Percentage grade and GPA are not the same thing. Your percentage is your standing in one course. Your GPA averages letter grades across courses, weighted by credit hours. A single course grade doesn't have a GPA — it has grade points that feed into one.
To calculate GPA: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add those, then divide by total credit hours. Three courses — an A (4.0) in 3 credits, a B (3.0) in 4 credits, and a C (2.0) in 3 credits — give (12 + 12 + 6) ÷ 10 = 3.0 GPA.
Weighted GPA applies to AP, IB, and honours courses, where scales often extend to 5.0 so that an A in a harder course outranks an A in a standard one. Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Some institutions treat A+ as 4.3 rather than 4.0, and a few don't use plus/minus grading at all. If a calculator gives one number and your course gradebook shows another, one of these is usually the cause:
⚠️ Ungraded work as zeros
Many gradebooks include not-yet-submitted assignments as zeros, dragging the displayed grade down.
⚠️ Dropped scores
Many courses drop the lowest quiz or homework score. If your calculation includes it and the gradebook excludes it, numbers diverge.
⚠️ Extra credit
Extra credit may be added to a category average, to the final percentage, or as bonus points in a total — each method produces a different result.
⚠️ Rounding policy
Some instructors round 89.5% up to an A−; others don't round at all. A grade on a boundary can land either side.
⚠️ Unequal weights within a category
A calculator may average all quizzes equally when the final quiz is actually worth double.
⚠️ End-of-term curves
A curve is usually added after all grades are in, so it won't appear in a mid-semester calculation.
📋 The syllabus is the authority, not the calculator. Use these tools to plan and estimate, then confirm anything consequential with your instructor — particularly near a grade boundary or when a scholarship or prerequisite depends on the outcome.
Multiply each category average by its weight as a decimal, add the results, then divide by the total weight of completed work. With homework at 91% (weight 0.20) and a midterm at 78% (weight 0.25), that's (18.2 + 19.5) ÷ 0.45 = 83.8%. For points-based courses, divide total points earned by total points possible.
Subtract your current grade's contribution from your target, then divide by the final's weight. If you have 84%, the final is worth 35%, and you need 70% overall: 84 × 0.65 = 54.6, then 70 − 54.6 = 15.4, then 15.4 ÷ 0.35 = 44%. Anything above that passes.
Average the scores within each category, multiply each average by that category's weight, add the products, and divide by the weights included. The key point is dividing by completed weight only — otherwise ungraded work is treated as zero and your grade appears artificially low.
Typically 90% and above, with 93–96% as a straight A and 90–92% as an A− on plus/minus scales. Institutions differ, and some set the A threshold higher, so confirm against your syllabus.
Convert the percentage to a letter grade first, then to grade points on the 4.0 scale — 90–92% is an A− worth 3.7. GPA then averages those points across courses weighted by credit hours, so a single course percentage becomes one input rather than a GPA by itself.
Often yes, depending on the final's weight and your current standing. With 84% going in and a final worth 35%, scoring just 44% on the exam still leaves you at 70% overall.
